The car has been to several shops. The idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, temp sensor, spark plugs, Hall Effect sensor in the dist. and EGR valve have been replaced already. As well as all vacuum leaks repaired. The car starts and stalls gradually running longer until fully warm then it will stay running "barelly" with the idle gradually coming down to low idle like it should then it will stumble almost die catch itself rev up and start this all over again. If you try to put it in gear before it's fully warm it dies instantly. If you hold the RPMs steady at any thing above idle it has a steady cut out every few seconds. Any ideas? I'm at a dead end don't know what to try next. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

  1. it sounds like egr valve has gone bad. quite common on 88 models

  2. Look closely at the distributor window  tone wheel attached to the distributor shaft, (under the 'pick-up" hall effect  switch), for looseness, this can sometimes cause like symptoms, also the wiring harness has it's share of failures, that's the one that runs from the IAC, TPS, and injector, to the main engine harness, verify a good ground at the top, rear head location, next to the O2 sensor connector. These will cause  intermittent codes and poor idle quality.  I assume there are no active codes?

  3. It sounds like the automatic idle speed chamber under the throtle body is 'coked' up. Remove the throtle body and clean it.
