  1. Your best bet is to find a Digital8 camcorder.

Although they are no longer made, Digital8 camcorders are still available new and used.  There are 3 types of 8mm video tapes available, and the Digital8 camera can read all of them.  The Digital8 camcorder will have a firewire port as well as composite video ports, so you will have several options on how to get the video off of the 8mm tape.

The VHS adapter is for a VHS-C tape.  Even if you can get an 8mm tape into the VHS adapter, your VCR will need to be reprogrammed to understand the video on the 8mm tape.

  2. no adaptors ever existed to allow video 8 playback in a VHS VCR. you are thinking of VHS-C. VHS-C is identical to VHS in all specifications except the cassette is made to hold less tape, and thus smaller. It can be adapted to play in a regular VCR.

video 8 is the wrong tape width, 8mm vs 12.5mm, the wrong coating formulation, metal vs oxide, the wrong linear speed, .57 ips vs 1.31 ips, and the wrong head speed, 12.5 fps vis 19 fps. no way compatible. however they did make VCRs that were video8 system instead of VHS. they are not very common and are more expensive that a camcorder.

  3. Yes they do. You slide the 8mm tape into the regular-size VCR tape and it will play in your VCR. I haven't a clue where to get them, do a few Google searches. They are such old technology now, with DVD Camcorders and Hard Drive Camcorders. Another option is to plug your camcorder with the tape in it into the VCR and you can record onto a tape in the VCR. Basically like recording TV to a VCR, but using the Camera in place of the TV. You will need some cables that connect to your VCR and Camcorder that can be found at Radioshack. Ask them, and they will be more than willing to help!
