Question:

9 month old and milk?

My son is 9 months old and I want to introduce milk. I have nursed him since birth, but am getting anxious about weening him. I will nurse him until he is a year but would like to introduce him to the taste of milk. My mother in-law suggested soy milk. Any suggestions?

This would not replace his feedings, only give him a taste of whats to come in the near future.

  1. My son is 9 months also, he is my 3rd son actually. I would not suggest starting milk until he is at least one. You could ask your doctor, as they may suggest one of the "older baby" formulas that would introduce some milk. Are you only breast feeding? If so I would instead start introducing foods, as before long that is where he will get the majority of his nutrition, not from milk. Good Luck~

  2. Formula until 12  months.

  3. hi there, i gave my daughter bits of full fat cows milk at 9 months, didn't replace her formula though but it didn't hurt her. Or, you could try a 1 year + milk or a growing up milk, cow and gate say you can use this from 10 months (and can buy them ready made so there is no messing with powder) and then try cows milk at 1 year. if there's no medical reason for you to put your baby on soy milk then i don't see why you should do it, only to change him again., just like the formula you mentioned.

it's totally your choice, good luck with what you decide x

  4. Pediatricians recommend waiting until they are a year old before introducing cow's milk.  You should either pump and switch to the bottle or switch to formula if you want to try weening from the breast.  And don't worry, he'll get used to it, but wait until his 1st birthday to introduce it.

  5. He can have very small amounts of regular milk at this age -- as part of his 'solid foods'.  (Either milk cooked into his foods, or a very small amount in a sippy cup.)  But he doesn't really need it.

Unless he is allergic to dairy, or you are a vegan family, I would not give him soy milk.  It's no healthier than cows milk, and there may be issues with hormones.  (The jury is still out on the dangers of soy, but why take the risk if you don't have to.) So either an ounce or two of whole cows milk, or just breastmilk and water/diluted juice until he's a year old.

  6. Maybe give him a bit at a mealtime. I wouldn't give him soy...its more expensive and if he likes it, it may be hard to switch him to regular milk later...........the reason that docs recommend a year is because of the digestive systems. if you do give him milk, watch for symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, tummyache, or vomiting just like you would with anyother food you introduce.

  7. you should wait one year before introducing cow's milk as it contains little vitamin D an essential vitaming for babies growth and development. well done for still breast feeding i stopped at 8 months

  8. it's too early.  docs recommend holding off of milk till 12 months, even in formula fed babies.

it's best that he continues to get breast milk only for now...12 months will be here soon hon. I'm weaning my son at 12 months too. he turned 10 months on the 21st of July.

    hang in there.
