My 9 month old wont finish a single bottle these days. She has 3 teeth now and the Dr. said she should have about 30 oz a day of her formula. Most days I can only get about 24 oz in her. I try to give her cheerios, soft veggies, and Gerber foods in between meals to suppliment, but is this normal? Have your children gone through this stage? What can I do to get her to eat? Thank you so much!

  1. Your child is probably enjoying the food too much to bother about milk! She should be trying loads of different foods by now, don't worry too much about the milk. Babies are not fussy eaters, the world is too new and exciting to think about shunning things. She'll eat if she wants to, as long as she's not poorly don't worry.

    Good Luck

  2. My son started doing this at about 4 months old which lets face it is pretty young given he wasn't getting anything else in the way of solids.  However the doctor said it was just his way of regulating the amount he took and subsequent weight....he started off chuby and then went small...and apparently this is normal....if its genetic they're going to be small then they regulate what they take in whether you like it or not....He's now 18 months and small for his age but healthy and oh soooo active....doesnt stop.....so I guess in the end, as long as your baby is taking something a day, thats all that matters.....keep an eye tho' but don't get neurotic....easier said than done, but usually these little ones 'miraculously' know what theyre up to!!

  3. 24 oz is all she needs right now. once babies start solids they start weaning themselves off all the formula they were used to drinking. she sounds just fine to me. WIC told me that babies at 9 months drink between 20-30 oz a day.

  4. Well, my daughter is nine months old as well, and her ped told me that the reason for this is....they are more active so their mind is on other things then just eating, also during teething they have less of an appetite, which is common occurances during this time frame and on going for a while, also the more solid foods she eats the less formula she is going to intake because their stomach does not get bigger just beacuse you change their diet. Hope this helps.

  5. Wow - 30oz sounds like a lot at that age!  My doctor and health visitor told me that my 10 month old daughter only needs between 16 and 24oz per day.  In actuality, she only drinks about 14oz and they were happy with that as she gets calcium from dairy foods.

  6. A nine month old needs 16-24 oz of formula/breastmilk a day.  This happen to my friends 9 month old.  He is fine.  Just give him enough meals and have his iron checked at the doctor appointments.

Edit to you details~ My son has been eating table food since about 8 1/2 months.  He gets oatmeal in the morning with cherrios, gerber finger foods for snacks, daycare brings in the big kids lucnch and just cuts it up, pizza, chicken nugents, casaroles, green beans..etc., then he gets yogurt or a fruit for a snack, then whatever I make for dinner.  He gets his bottles in the morning, before naps, and before bed.  Remember that sometimes you have to try something a few times before they can get used to the taste.

  7. 30 ounces does sound like a lot for a 9 month old. i wouldn't worry about it. 24 ounces is fine -- just do more solids. breakfast, lunch & dinner.   I'm transitioning my 8 month old to more solids and less bottles. Right now she's getting 3-4 bottles a day. I feed her three meals a day (i make her baby food still: veggies, fruits, ground-up chicken, lentils, etc). At her mealtimes, I also give her cut-up pieces of fruit (mango, avacado, banana, etc), cheese (muenster), and whole wheat toast so she can practicer her finger food skills.
