Question:

9 month old getting over ear infection and brown stuff coming out of ear?

My 9 month old has just finished 10 days of antibiotics for an ear infection and my mother noticed that he had some brownish liquid coming out of his ear. I never saw it myself. She thinks that its just some of the infection coming out....I'm a little worried as I've never heard of brown stuff leaking out of an ear - especially one that should be over the infection?

Any similar experiences? Do we need to go back to the doctor's office?

thanks

  1. He most likely still has ear infection. He should see the doctor again . the infection probably built up enough pressure that it caused a rip in the ear drum and is now draining out the ear.  This is what happened with my kids.  I have 4 kids and 3 of them have ear problems 2 have had tubes and my 10 month old who has had 6 to 7 ear infections some lasted through 3 rounds of antibiotics and is waiting to see a specialist and will probable need tubs as well.   I would take him to see the doctor  just to make sure.

  2. Its just the infection no need to go back to the doc especailly if your child is happy.

  3. I don't think you should go back for that, that's normal for an ear infection. That's the medicines working. Just be sure to clean it (the outside only) so the infection doesn't come back. You should go to the doctor if its a lot of that stuff coming out of if he develops fever or pain. Good luck and hope your baby gets well soon :)
