Today my 9 year old little girl told me that it hurt on her left breast, I ask her if she got hurt playing or something and she said no! but she said it hurts a lot! I felt it and it is a small, round ball right there. I am calling her pediatrician tomorrow morning, but in the meantime I am looking for some more information or if someone out out there has the same problem or had had it, I would like to know if this is something to worry about or not. Thanks for you help.

  1. It is a breast bud - one of the stages of breast development. Your little girl is growing up! Please re-assure her before she goes to bed, so she doesn't worry all night.

This is the second stage of breast development, and the first [ physical ] sign of adolescence.

Breast development is usualy not very even at first - so you might need to invest in some camisole bras when she needs more coverage, and lined swim tops.

Be prepared - she may start menstruating within 2 to 3 years.

If you still want to see a pediatrician, try a female one for this.

[ My friend, a single dad with a Phd, thought the same thing when his daughter started developing.]

PS: do NOT let anyone tell you it is a cyst, and remove it!

I have heard nightmare stories of docs who did 'mastectomies' on little girls!!

  2. I was a late bloomer, but when I was 10/11, I became convinced that I had breast cancer (I am now 24).  I had what began as one or two lumps (very tender and painful) that eventually spread out to become breast tissue.  I was so concerned that I asked the school nurse what she thought.

I wish you all the best at the doctor's and hope that there is nothing serious happening and that my explanation is indeed the reason for your daughter's discomfort.

  3. She cannot get breast cancer at her age. It could be a boil or a cyst. Your doctor will sort it out.

  4. From your description, it is probably not cancer but a normal part of puberty. Read over the following information about 'breast buds' and see if this is what your little girl may be feeling.

Childhood breast cancer is very rare. It can occur though as a primary location or as a secondary location and because of that slight possibility your daughter should be examined by her pediatrician. Childhood cancers are different than adult cancers.

Best of luck to you and your daughter tomorrow.

  5. Hello,

No need to fret hon, could just be fatty tissue, sometimes they roll into a ball under the skin.

As long as your going to the docter's, I am sure they will find out the problem, hopefully it won't be anything to concern yourself with.

Many blessings to you and your daughter sweetie,

    Peace...

  6. It is very unlikely for it to be breast cancer at her age, however, there is a small chance that it could be. Get it checked out immediately. If it's not breast cancer, it is a cyst or some other abnormal growth.

  7. It sounds to me like she is starting early breast development (breast buds).  Children are going through puberty earlier and earlier.

  8. probably not, but just to be safe go see the doctor
