90's toy cars?

Question

in the early 90's i had a toy car that you could change the wheels,motors,gears,bodies and chassis.they were AA powered. in some of the cars you could even add an extra battery for more speed.at least one of the models was 4x4 capable.who made them, what were they called.is there a toy like them out there now. they were not RC cars they only went straight ahead unless you had the track for them.
