Question:

90 Mitsubishi Eclipse help?

I've got a 90 Mitsubishi Eclipse and when I put it into drive this morning, it seemed like it wanted to stay in park, like half park half drive. When I went to reverse, I got the tire marks on the ground as if I was peeling out. When I do park, it is on a semi-slope and so I've read that the pin locks up or something like that. So I have a few questions about it..

1.) Do I need to replace the shifter linkage? If so, what parts do I need?

2.) Do I need to put some tranny fluid in? If so, where can I drain it from and where do I put it in?

3.) Is there something else wrong?

All feedback appreciated.

  1. If you are on an incline than try to use your emergency brake before putting it in park. this will help keep some of the weight of the vehicle from  putting too much force on the parking paw(its the actual piece of metal that locks it in park) It should be fine other than that unless it is doing it all the time even on level ground. There is a small dipstick on the front of the transmission (about an 1"1/2 to 2" ) for checking fluid level and adding fluid. for draining there should be a plug on the bottom of the trans. another thing to check is the adjustment of the cable to be sure it is in the right gears to match the shifter indicator. Haynes makes a good book for all the tech on these cars.
