90 days in rio maybe 180 days where in rio should i stay?

budget minded traveler...is the hotel vermont good enough...should i just get an apartment...

how much should i spend each month for a place to rest and entertain....

im actually planning on doing the same.  If you plan on staying there for that long I strongly advise you start working (teaching english) as soon as you get there..you will learn portuguese blazingly fast as well as better supporting yourlself.

As for the pricing.  Try to stay away from hotels.  Apts would likely save you money.  Maybe even hostels.  Look around the net or go to you local book store.

I would assume $8000USD($18000Reis) would be enough if you budget the trip well.  

Im sure you know going in their winter is much cheaper(our summer).  Staying there for that amount of time should be a great adventure, boa sorte em sua viagem!

Google information about the region an it's economical sectors and check out the economy in your firs t few days and rent a moel room, then find what your seeking..your smart enough!

rent an apartment, it will be as clean and safe as a good hotel and much cheaper, and  you will have a kitchen which will save you more money.  if you are just staying in the city of rio, then stay in copacabana or ipanema.  do not stay south of sugarloaf if you can help it.  barra da tijuca is beautiful and clean, but it's actually outside the city really so you can't walk anywhere but in that neighborhood.  

staying outside the city?  go to buzios, parati, and petropolis.

above all.... learn portuguese.... the basics if you can, otherwise you will feel confused and be open to being taken advantage of.

Call Brian at Rio Charm ( i think that is his name - anyway it is the guy at rio charm - the web site should have the info)...he can set you up in an apt...that is the way to go - it is cheap cheap cheap....stay in Ipanema.....for sure...i lived there for five months....there are great places to eat and drink. dont know about hotel vermont - but i stayed at cesear park and a few others. you can spend as much or as little as you want. there are some great cheap places to eat...they have buffets that you pay by the kilo....the book Rio For Partiers has everything you need to know - you can even call the author and he can hook you up with tours of the city - i mean cool ones - like bar hopping at nite - it is safer till you kow what you are doing to go with folks who know their way around....have fun...you will love it...!!!

For a period that long, an apartment is the way to go.  Check out "www.vannarioflats.com.br".  I've used Vanna about 15 times and can only give compliments.  E-mail her and tell her what you want and she'll find a decent place for you to stay.  Obviously the closer to the beach the higher the price.  Doesn't cost anything to ask so ask Vanna and a couple other people (sites listed in others responses) but make sure you give them all the same details (dates, # bedrooms, location, etc.) so you compare apples to apples.  Plus with an apartment is you can cook so reduces the cost for some meals and drinks though you have to try the kilo restaurants.  The longer you stay the cheaper the price/month though you can expect that the price will increase if you are around for Christmas/New Years and Carnival or they will take that into consideration when they quote a price.  As for the amount to spend, depends when and what kind of entertaining you want to do.  Don't forget that if you travel on a tourist visa, you legally can't have a job/employment which includes charging for English lessons--barter instead of that's what you plan on.

If you´re not on a budget stay in Copacabana, you might even find a place at craigslist.com, but be careful in Rio, you should know where to go and where not to go. ask locals, Brazilians are usually very friendly towards foreigners.

If I was you, I'd stay in beautiful upscale Barra da Tijuca. It's safe & only 10 minutos from Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana beaches. If you need help with apartment rentals, just email me. Good luck.
