  1. Most 9-1-1 agencies have a pre-employment test.  It's all a matter of personal opinion on whether it is hard or not.  Some agencies use their own version of a test, some use software such as Criti-call.  The software tests are more of a common sense and multi-tasking type test.  There are dispatcher test books that you can get at major bookstores that may be of some assistance or at least give you an idea of what to study and learn.

Some agencies have their 9-1-1 dispatchers and 9-1-1 calltakers as seperate positions.  Austin, Texas is an example of that.  If the radio isn't for you, then maybe answering calls is.

I've been a dispatcher for almost 14 years and from what I've seen in all of those years, either you can do it or you can't.  It really has nothing to do with background, how smart you are, etc.  It's a very unique job.  I would suggest you just try it out.  You may be just perfect for it!  I've obviously loved it for 13 years!

  2. My department had a little memory test, and typing.  Other than that not much.  Then you have in house training and if you cant keep up, your out the door...
