92nd PGA Championship – What’s in store for the golf enthusiasts?
The latest news making waves is that the 92nd PGA championship is due in three days. However, as fans and critics are speculating about the winners and losers, the question lies that is the PGA championship going to be a promising festival?
The PGA Championship is going to take place at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, USA from 12th August to 15th August 2010. The event might be big for the golf enthusiasts but when compared to the other championships, it is a relatively a low-level championship. It’s just like the youngest brother of three strong, rich tycoons.
The event has the strongest field of the season, according to the world rankings. Despite that it has not been able to throw off its image of yet another championship only because of the fact that it has not got anything unique about it. The factor of uniqueness is the competitive edge for any sport festival, as the unique trait makes the festival stand out from rest of the sport competitions.
Now let’s have a look at the masters of PGA. The masters are similar, since they are held in the same place every year. This feature goes in the favour of the players, as they become accustomed to the course. However, at the same time it sets a benchmark of lower scores. The second to the masters is the British Open, which is held at the linked courses every year. The linked courses are known for their difficulty and the torrent weather conditions. The player who develops on such courses later shines to be one of the best players in the world. Then comes the US Open, which decides its location on the basis of the challenging setup.
However when the above-mentioned events are compared with the PGA championship, we will notice that the PGA has not got anything that distinguishes it from others. 8 out of 10 times it is held at the same venue with a set up that is comparatively less difficult, as compared to the US open. Another problem that is linked with the PGA championship is its timings. It is held 1 month prior the British open, and two months before the US open. According to the experts, it is held just before the real action starts and often leaves the players in turmoil.
Despite its easier setup and variable course, the performance record of the players in the event is not much encouraging than from other events. This statement is justified by the fact that Tiger Woods has not managed to win all 14 majors, despite four of them being the PGAs.
Now let us analyze the player performance in the PGAs. While talking of any golf event, the first name that comes to the mind is Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, Tiger has performed so poor in this season, making the title unattainable for him. With him gone, it is very hard to predict the champ of the event.
Referring to the past PGA champs, Geoff Ogilvy is one of the most distinguished winners. He is amongst the nine Australian players that have qualified the PGA championship. The other names are John Senden, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman, Steve Elkington, Stuart Appleby, Michael Sim, Jason Day, and Adam Scott. Geoff holds the record of three top 10 finishes from 2005 to 2008. Not only this but he has qualified the championship 7 times .Geoff Ogilvy is a 2006 US Open champion, but unfortunately he hasn’t made the cut this seasons US Open and the British Open. However he is back in the PGA championship with his coach Dale Lynch.
According to the Australian coach, it won’t be difficult teeing on the course of Whistling Straits; however one thing that needs attention is accuracy in shots, which means an excellent putter is required here.
On the whole everyone including the media, players and spectators are looking forward to the upcoming event that is taking place from the 12th of August to the 15th of August, 2010 at the Whistling Straits, despite the fact that it fails to offer much variety to the players.
