  1. It is the marks on the pulleys that count. Before removing the old belt, mark their position and preferably tie them in position. Then put the new belt on, tighten it and all is well.

    Position of the pulleys must be perfect otherwise the engine will be out of timing and run horridly at best, but you probably know that bit.

  2. ive never seen a timing belt that had timing marks or arrows on it. i would stop right where you are and take it to a shop before you bend a valve

  3. the timing belts that i have seen and replaced do not have any marks on them. you line the indicators up as you should according to the book and go from there.  

  4. The marks are on the sprockets. If you do manage to get it on, turn the motor over S.L.O.W.L.Y. by the pulley to make sure you don't hit the valves and bend them all.
