Sounds like a good idea. I have pulled off the intake, head cover, exhaust, distributor, plugs, injectors, fuel rail, coolant bypass & outlet etc. to change head gasket. How much has to be put back on to try this?

  1. If you can get a socket on the main bolt and a suitable breaker bar you can use the starter to break loose the bolt.

Position the breaker bar so that it is supported by a frame rail,, or anywhere that it can push against securely (safely), without slipping off.

Then simply crank the engine over quickly, a second or two will be enough. The rotation of the starter will be enough to break the bolt loose.

Don't try to hold the breaker bar, you will only hurt yourself.
