My car is taking longer than normal to shift and when it is trying to shift it sounds like it is reving up really loud. But if I let off the gas it will finally shift. Does this sound like I need to change the transmission?? It has 186,000 miles on it and when I got it, it had around 120,000 and it has never been change since i've had it.

  1. Chances are the transmissiojn fluid needs to be changed.  Best way to tell is to find the dipstick for the transmission fluid.  Pull it out and look at the fluid on the stick.  If it is blackened, then yes it needs a change.  Bad fluid will cause a transmission to "hang up" while changing gears.  And whatever you do just get a fluid change not a flush.  Flushes can create more problems then they are worth.

  2. It sounds like the transmission is going out, but I would check the fluid level first.  Start the car, put the parking brake on and put it in Neutral.  Let it warm up then check the dipstick under the hood.  If the fluid is low or has a burnt smell and is really dark (it should be red), it needs to be changed, and hopefully, fix your problem.

  3. my answer is try to check it out first on auto repair shop...
