I have a 95 merc 4.3 v6 with a cracked block, i dont want to put a new engine in the boat so I was wondering if I can take a 4.3 chevy car engine block and transfer everything else off the merc to it.

  1. The block itself is the same but internals inside the block are stronger in a boat motor

#1 the cam shaft is bigger/stronger in a boat motor.

If you thinking about pulling the starter , alternator...etc and putting them on your car engine don't do it.  Car engines do not have the strength to hold up in a marine environment.

Marine engines have a larger cam that most car engines

Marine engines also have brass fittings which hold up better in a wet environment.

It might be cheaper in the short term but the motor won't last.  You wouldn't run you car at 5000 rpm for an extended amount of time like you do in a boat......

Check and see if you have water in your oil from the cracked block.  If there is no water in the oil the block might be able to be welded or stiched if the crack isn't too big.  If there is water in the oil the best solution is to start over with a new block.

p.s. Check out the website "iboats"  There is a ton of info there on this subject.
