  1. the first guy is right are you parked on a down hill slope and did it roll forward when you shut it off it could be jammed on the parking gear you might be able to push it back or forward to relive it

  2. o_o maybe its not responding to your foot on the brake for some reason? or something could actually be jammed up. have a mechanic (or even triple A) check it out if you can keep the car in one place long enough for them D:

  3. if your that stupid to not put your foot on the brake before trying to shift it you probally shouldn't be driving a car on the road lmfao.....but in all seriousness you should get your shifting cable checked out because i had the same problem in the past....and in a 96 explorer it would probally run you about 100-150 depending on where you purchase it from.

  4. totemT might be right,,,

check your stop light if its working,,that circuit is the one controlling the solenoid to release the lock that's holding it on park

  5. On my car I have to put my foot on the brake pedal in order to take it out of park.  I have actually forgotten this and tried to put it in gear only to rememeber after a quick panic that I didn't have my foot on the brake.  Is it possible that this is what happened to you?  Also, don't you have a manual override to take it out of park?
