Question:

97 Cadillac Catera new key question?

The dealer said if I bought a new key, it'd be $100 and another $100 to program it. They said if I bought a key-fob, it'd be $80 and $50 to program. I asked if I bought both if they could just do the programming for $100 for both. They said no, it's a different operation. I decided to get a key-fob since I already have one key. But then they said I need to have all my keys and key-fobs present when they program in the new key-fob or they will cease to work? I'm thinking when they program a new key, they must just put it in "learn" mode or something and give it all they keys and key-fobs.

Could I get the $100 key copy (from the dealer) and when I come in just say I need the key-fob programmed? If they re-enter all the keys, my new one would be entered too, right?

  1. i wouldnt

  2. Go to an automotive locksmith and get away from the rip off dealer.

  3. They are two different operations but you could get the key done that is pretty much a dealer only thing. but you can programme the fobs at anytime and it has no affect on the key

  4. There are locksmiths available to program the transponder keys for your Catera.  It is a good idea to have all the keys and remotes available.  There is an aftermarket key supplier in Ohio that sells a compatible transponder key blank for the Catera on eBay for $14.95 plus shipping.  You can also find a second remote on eBay for far less than the dealer charge.  However, the remote for your car is marked on the back with the number 1 or 2 and a GM Code number.  The remote must be the other number that you do not already have, and then be in the proper number range to be fully compatible.  I just had to replace a key and remote on a 2001 Catera.  The key was $23 with shipping, the remote was $28 with shipping, and the locksmith charged $75 to cut the key and program the key and the remote.  The total cost was about 30% of the dealer charge.  If you want to send the codes from the back of your existing remote and the number to tvccs1 at gmail dot com, I'll try and locate the right remote and a supplier for you.  Good luck.
