Question:

97 Honda Accord 4cyl Road Trip Help

I'm leaving tomorrow to go on a road trip from Kentucky to Oregon. I expect that on parts of my trip I'm gonna drive on freeways with absolutely no police or even a speed limit. So, I'm wondering what the highest RPM I can consistently run my car at that won't cause any problems. It has 98k on it and I just had the timing belts replaced and the car serviced. Thanks for the help!

  1. Every road that people can actually travel on (meaning not off-road) has a speed limit. So wherever your going, there's a speed limit, although it may not be posted, the speed limit will be whatever the last sign said. Traveling at high speeds isn't a good thing to do, you'll probably get carried away and increase the risk of getting pulled over. Pretty much everyone i know that have driven fast across states have been pulled over. Once my buddy was pulled over and he had an expensive radar detector as well! Just drive normal speeds, you'll reduce wear on your car, keep the heat down, and you wont get a ticket.

One thing you don't wanna deal with, is a speeding ticket in another state. That becomes a big headache to deal with. It makes a ticket a harder to fight.

I wouldn't be worrying about the RPM too much, just don't go anywhere near redline, you might find yourself ruining the engine (over heat). You should also worry about your wheels, not all tires are rated to go at high speeds for long periods of time. That's why you see those police chases on TV where the person evading blows a tire just from going very fast for a long period of time, without the police having to do anything. Your more likely to over heat your engine then anything else though. Change your oil before you go, that helps keep the engine well lubricated. Heat = Cars Enemy. Remember that.

  2. Montana baby! No daytime limit on some freeways.

  3. If you keep it at 80 or so you should be ok. i usually do around 100mph and my car is fine. just dont change speed to quick.remember your car is at a high rpm so always check your guages.
