Question:

97 Saturn: Radio Installation Questions PLEASE HELP!

I just recently bought a JVC Cd player and the correct wiring and Dash mount that goes along with it. When trying to install the smart wiring I noticed the wires for the Cd player were opened and that this was going to be a more technical job. I was also told that Saturns are very sensitive and that a single crossed wire could cause a fire or short circuit. I'm contemplating taking all of my equipment to a Mechanic and getting the installation done there. My question's are: 1. Should I save my money and go for the installation myself. 2. Should I take it to a dealer and have him install it? 3. If I take it to a dealer would my pre-bought parts lower the installation cost. 4. About how much would this cost me? 5. Are Saturns really as sensitive with this type of wiring?

If someone could please send me answers to one, some, or even all of these questions or even a website explaining some of these answers please let me know.

Thanks.

  1. hope this helps on the harness wiring speaker wire will be a solid color and the same color with a line in it power is red remote is blue  and ground is black i would do the speaker wires first those are the easiest then go from there you wont use every wire on your harness

but i would try to do it first as long as you have the power wire connected and ground right  you cant start a fire never even heard of that

    good luck

  2. Actually, that's one of the easier cars to install a new CD player.  I'm not quite clear on what the problem is with your wiring; do you still have a factory radio plug in the car, or just bare wires to connect to?

I've never had any particular trouble with Saturn wiring.  If you're using the wiring in the factory radio harness, you're not going to cause serious damage to other vehicle systems even if you do cross the wrong wires.  Don't be worried about fires; your vehicle's wiring is protected by fuses.

If you do choose to have your radio installed professionally, don't go to a mechanic or a dealer.  Go to a car audio shop.  Many shops are still willing to install equipment they didn't sell.

You can e-mail me if you have specific questions about how to complete your installation.  But it's well within the ability range of an average DIY-er.

  3. If your not comfortable doing it yourself, just take it to an audio shop and have them do the work for you, and you having the necessary parts to do the install, it should lower the price, but call ahead to different places and ask around to make sure you get the best deal you can!
