97 escort shifter lock is not unlocking

Question

have a 97 escort wagon.the shifter wont come out of park. i have to take the console out and push the safety lock off because the brake wont make it click open. is there a relay for that or a fuse. the fuses are all ok in the fues box.it is supose to be locked when the brake isnt on and unlock when you push the brake. it goes in lock when you let off the brake but doesnt come unlocked when you push the brake

I believe that your cable linkage has came off or broke, It could be at the brake padel or at the gear shift.

Most probable: Faulty brake switch on the brake pedal arm. Do your brake lights illuminate when the pedal is depressed? If not-bad switch if you have power to it. If they do- faulty interlock solenoid or wiring to the shifter.
