How do I check empty and refill tranny fluid from gear box and what kind of fluid is recommended ?

  1. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission, a 17mm allen.

    Then there is a 17mm allen on the front side, facing the headlight to fill the transmission up.  Volkswagen is very specific on the fluid you use.  You will need to go to the dealer and get some manual trans fluid for a 97 golf.  Usually takes about 2 pints,

    You have to hold the bottle at an angle from the botom and squeeze the fluid in.  Towards the end of the second bottle,  fluid will start pouring out as fast as you put it in.  Quickly put the fill plug back in as the fluid is pouring out.  Don't wait till it stops pouring or the level will be to low.

    About 20 YEARS AGO you used to stick your finger in the fill hole to check the level.  That died with grandpa.


  2. its a sealed transmision you have to open up the drain plug and stick your finger in to check it if your finger is wet when you pull it out your fluid is good if your finger is dry you need fluid
