I have a 1998 Toyota Rav4 with approx 103,000 miles. The car also backfires upon acceleration from stop position. This problem has been going on for the last 1-1 1/2yrs but has been getting worse recently.I have tried fuel injector cleaners. I have tried to change the type of gas. Nothing seems to be working.

  1. its prolly cause its old. go to a mechanic and see what they say.juss get an estimate and see if its worth the fixing or if ud be better of getting a used car or something.or you could juss turn the radio up so u dont hear anything lol i think the first idea is better though

  2. usually back fires your problem with emisson air

diverter valve, I would try a new gas filter,if these are

ok, then I would check fuel in injector, this can also

    cause your problems,

  3. did u get a tune up lately if not it might the the distributor cap

  4. there is a dead pedestrian lodged in the throttle cable. Most likely the right hand is stuck between it and the engine block if he was facing you when you hit him. After a year and a half he is dried out by now and a long piece of pipe should work to chip him out of the engine compartment. That should fix the problem.

  5. I had this same problem on my car and it had about the same amount of miles on it and was giving this problem off and on for over the last year.

Initially I changed the fuel filter.  What happens is that over time, sediment and even water get trapped in the filter and block it somewhat, so fuel cannot pass through it freely.

After changing the filter my car persisted with the sputtering and backfiring and even began to act as if it was running out of fuel.

I replaced the fuel pump.  It was a nightmare because it is located in the fuel tank so I had to remove the tank to replace it.  This was what my problem turned out to be.

I believe that your fuel pump is going bad but try replacing the filter first.

    My car is a 97.

    Good luck

  6. This condition is typically caused by a fuel delivery problem. That said, there's a lot of factors affecting fuel delivery, especially for an electronically fuel injected one as I assume your car is. Given the age of your vehicle, your best bet is to take it to a garage specializing your brand as your condition usually points to multiple system failure.

  7. I had the same problems with my 03. I replaced three items, although I don't know which one was the fix.

    gas cap

    egr valve

    air filter

you can do them all yourself for about $30

    good luck

  8. It's your fuel pump or your injectors.  Take it to a mechanic.
