  1. Since the truck is a 1998 you should be getting a check engine light that comes on  because of the miss. In fact, if the miss is as bad as you are talking about, the check engine light should be flashing off and on to signal to you that the engine has a severe miss.

First thing I would do is clear all the codes. I would then drive the truck until it warms up. Since this is OBDII, an engine miss is a 1 trip failure, so the light should come on within one trip of detecting the miss.

I would then retrieve the code which should start with P03XX. For example, if it is cylinder number 4 you should get a code P0304. If it is multiple cylinder misfire or a random misfire you will probably get a P0300.

Once you have determined the cylinder I would do a compression test on that cylinder to see if I was dealing with a mechanical issue.

  2. remove the plug wires with it running one at a time and listen to the engine, as you remove them if the RPM drops then that cylinder was firing, if there is no change then it is bad, If you can get a scan tool on the newer cars the computer will tell you

  3. make sure they are not crossed up ... and as far as which cylinder take one plug out at a time...

  4. pull all plug wires loose, just put them loosely on the correct plug crank the engine then remove the wires one at a time then put it back on the plug, when you pull one that doesn't make a difference in the way it's running that's your bad cylinder.
