99 eddie bauer stero controls not working

Question

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer where none the buttons on the stereo are working but the stereo controls on the steering wheel works. This is an intermittent problem where most of the time the buttons on the stereo does not work, but sometimes it does. Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it myself?
