I have replaced a check valve in the fuel line. That made no difference. This problem is worst when the boat sits overnight or longer. I need a method to diagnose this problem. Pouring gasoline in the carb. will get it to start but it will usually stall quickly. High R.P.M.s and lots of throttle are the key to getting it running. Once it is running the boat preforms and runs very well.

  1. Sounds like the choke is not activating.  When the motor is cold, the choke butterfly plate( you can see this by removing the flame arrestor from the carb, and looking into the carb throat) should be almost fully closed.  As the motor warms, this will open.  Possibly sticky linkage, try some carb cleaner, both down the throat and on all external linkages.  Also check for adequate pressure from the fuel pump to the carb.  If your boat has a water seperating filter (all boats should, in my opinion) , remove it and dump the fuel out into a container, looking for water.  If any water is present, replace the filter.  These filters should be replaced once a year, anyway.

  2. It sounds like the float is sticking or more likely that the accelerator pump is bad.  Both are internal on the carb.  If you can do it yourself then just get a carb kit and go for it.  If not, take it to a good repair shop.

For diagnosis, its easy.  When the boat is off, look down the carb and put it to full throttle while looking.  You should see a big spray of fuel come out.  You may need some one to put the boat to full throttle while you look.   If you dont see qa nice heavy spray of fuel come out of the jets and down the carb thats your problem.
