so i was in science class today and we used a 9volt battery lantern. i've seen 18 volt lanterns on the internet.

my question is whats the difference between the 9v small battery that you see by the store checkout counters and the lantern.

also, as in guitars how big is the 18v battery for active pickups and what's the difference between the 9v and 18v

  1. the difference is that one's a battery and the other is a lantern

  2. The lantern batteries are generally larger and can provide the greater power that a lantern needs.

The small 9v battery consists of 6 1.5v cells in series which can provide power limited to around 100 milliamps and with a shorter running lifetime compared to lantern batteries.  Our lantern batteries are 6v but you may be able to obtain 9v ones.  I expect you would use two in the 18v lantern.  They would be wired in series to give 18v.  Lanterns require at least 0.3 amps and often more.  The small 9v batteries could not provide that current.
