Bare with me guys, I don't know much about gun. So I was thinking about getting a 9mm pistol for a gift to my husband and for our house protection.

We have family that works at FN manufacturing. Do they make good guns or is there a better band?

I want something nice but not to expensive. Also remember that I need to beable to hand the gun too. (I'm a small women)

Any input would be great about gun sizes/styles and manufacturing.

Thanks

  1. I have sold hundreds of guns and taught gun safety and gun usage to lots of people. The thing I will tell you is this....

Buy a gun that feels like it was made for "your" hand.

I mean, when you pick it up; you feel like you are just making a fist and pointing with your finger.

Most women with small hands like the feel of the Smith and Wesson "Lady Smith" it's a revolver and comes in .38 cal. but many big macho guys say they like the way it feels in their hand.

If a weapon feels awkward in your hand you will have difficulty firing and hitting your target during a life and death situation.

I personally use a 9MM Beretta Model 92FS with Crimson Trace laser sights. My wife named it "Baby" which is all right with me

  2. FN makes nice reliable guns.  Reliability and how they fit your hand makes all the difference in the world.  A heavier pistol will not have as much recoil feel as a lighter one will have.  My wife has shot my Sig P226 and Beretta 92 both are large 9 mm pistols.  She can also hit within the 9 ring on a target with both at 10 yards as well.  She does prefer to shoot .22 pistols for practice.  I do as well.  For home defense a 9 mm is a good choice.  If you are open to suggestions, then you might also look at .357 revolvers using .38 special ammunition.  They are not as complicated and easier to learn to shoot.

I would suggest going to a local range that also has rental guns.  Try some of them and see what you both think.  You each may have to make a few allowances to find just one for the both of you.  The other thought is get him one now that fits him and later get one that fits you.  Then you don't have to compromise on the fit at all.  Stick with major brands like Sig, Beretta, FN, Walther, Colt, Browning, Rugger and Smith and Wesson and you shouldn't have any problems.

  3. Yes FN makes nice handguns and rifles. I'm not sure if they make a single stack 9mm which would be easier for smaller hands to grasp properly however.

  4. Yes, FN makes top of the line handguns.

  5. A shotgun is a much better choice for home protection than a handgun, especially in untrained hands. But if you are intent on buying a handgun, go to a shooting range that rents guns, and try out several styles and calibers. That way, you can find the one that "fits" you best. And after you buy a gun, make sure that both of you take a handgun training class, and spend time at the range practicing shooting.

  6. FN is  definitely a good company.

I'm not 100% familiar with their pistols but I've never heard anything bad about them.

  7. If your talking for home defense only, consider a 12ga shotgun like the mossberg 500 or a coach gun

The FN firearms are wonderful firearms

Whatever firearm you choose, please take classes on its proper care and use. There is greater danger in self injury if you are unsure how to use or care a firearm properly.

  8. You're in safe hands.

FN Herstal (Fabrique Nationale) makes most of the United State's small arms.  If you choose to get a FN, you might look into a FNP9 in DA/SA.

I would suggest a Sig Sauer P226 however. The best 9mm you can get for sure. Ask the U.S. Navy SEALs, Federal agents, the Texas Rangers, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Michigan State Police what they think about the P226.

  9. I like the Beretta 92FS. I have one for home protection.

And just because you're small doesn't mean you couldn't handle a big gun. I'm pretty petite and I can shoot a .300 win mag without a problem. Don't sell yourself short just because you're afraid of recoil or gun size.

  10. The best self-defense caliber is the 357 Magnum, because it has been tried, true, tested, and proven to be the best.* You can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in a 357 Magnum.* You get two (2*) handguns for the price of one.* Use 125 grain jacketed hollow points for self-defense ammo.* It is a no non-sense man stopper.* Comfortable to shoot.* Get a 4 or 6 inch barreled revolver.*
