9th Eva Kanyo Memorial: Russian men and women sweep away all the titles, Budapest, Hungary
The annual tournament Eva Kanyo Memorial was once again held in Budapest, Hungary, this year. The event closed on Sunday, December 4, 2011, with Russia dominating over all team and all-around title positions.
As the name suggests, the competition is held as a tribute to Hungarian gymnast Eva Kanyo.
Kanyo was the all-around champion in a meet against Great Britain in 1978. She was also a member of the Hungarian National team at the Strasbourg World Championships in the same year.
The event was attended by famous former gymnasts who made up the judges panel and also carried out the awards presentation to the winners.
They included Olympic champion Zoltan Magyar from Hungary, Yelena Zamolodchikova from Russia, Ukraine’s Oksana Omelianchik and Bogdan Makuts, who is also from Ukraine.
Last year, the tournament was held in late November, with the host country leading most events and emerging as the strongest contender in the competition.
The all-around competition was split into two different categories: the team round and the individual round.
The individual round was further divided into three levels. Differentiated on the basis of age and competence, these were: youth, junior and senior levels.
All eight of the titles were secured by Russian men and women in an awe-inspiring sweep.

On the men’s side, Dmitry Stolyarov was successfully giving the Hungarian gymnast, Vid Hidvegi, and Ukraine’s Yevgen Yudenkov a hard time as he topped all the scores in the senior level with his 86.997 points.
Hidvegi came in second with 85.898 points, followed by Yudenkov with 82.298 points.
