  1. Do something with plants. That's always fun, easy and gives pretty concise data. For example, try different types of fertilizer. Control- plant with no fertilizer. Then, you should have two or more other plants to try different fertilizers on. Maybe, instead of store bought fertilizers, you can try finding out what organic materials make the best fertilizing materials. You can use things like fruits, vegetables, etc. Anything organic. I don't know. I'm spitballing. I did something like this in 8th grade, but I'm in 12th now so... wow. Memory loss XD If you would like me to continue with this idea, feel free to email me at bestest_vee@yahoo.com

  2. Burn different fuel types and compare their waste. variables and controls would be easy to figure out, and it has a real-world application. plus you can find all the answers on wikipedia, so u should know how to set it up.

  3. Mythbusters to the rescue !  Their stuff is aimed at young adolescents and tests basic questions your students may be interested in.

My two picks would be as follows:

If you have access to an outside area, bottle rockets would be a good project - testing the basic variables such as volume of air used to generate height, or the relationship between the energy introduced to the system and the height reached by the "rockets" depending upon their mass.  (eg, put in the same amount of air and see whether the relationship between height reached compared to weight is linear or not).

There are a lot of bottle rocket sites on google - they are safe, cheap and messy enough to be fun!

For an educationalist's rationale - NASA gives you a rave review about the educational benefits - http://exploration.grc.nasa.gov/educatio...

""Two-Liter Pop Bottle Rockets may well be the GREATEST PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEACHING TOOL EVER CREATED!!" Middle grades students can manipulate and control variables, see their hypotheses verified or refuted, and graph their findings."

Another one is "mentos in coke bottles"  Try putting one mentos mint  in a bottle of diet coke (outside!) the reaction is quite spectacular.  THere are all sorts of variables to play with - reaction surface - ingredients (eg, compared with table salt) & etc.  There was a mythbusters segment about this that you could crib.

You would need eye safety glasses and perhaps raincoats for this one.
