  1. There _are_ perfectly legal ways for a 15-year old to be in possession of large sums of money. :)

The point would be that if you don't have an account with the bank, they'll want to start one up for the teen. Which would require parental permission.

Also, there is a law that states that for any transaction of ten thousand dollars or higher, a form has to be filled out on the spot for the IRS. :)

Does that answer some of your questions? Feel free to drop me an email if you have any specific questions - I'm NOT a lawyer or a CPA, but I do financial freedom coaching.

    Good luck,

  3. You put the check on hold and verify with the bank that the check is drawn on.

I was a bank teller years ago and we had this 17 year old come in with a $40,000 check he wanted cashed.  He had $100 in his savings account.  We held the check, gave him $100 of that amount and he left.  We called the bank and asked about the $40,000 check and they called the company who wrote it.  The amount was correct but it wasn't issued to him.  What he did was steal the check and use a chemical wash to wash away the payee.  He ran the check through the computer and put his name in there.

So a 15 year old with $10,000 and I am the teller?  I am holding funds and doing a lot of investigating before he gets all that money.

  4. I'd bring to the attention of my supervisor who should notify the adult listed on the account....after that it's there prerogative.
