I have been looking for a car for quite a while, on craigslist there is a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta for sale for $3,300 and it has 180k miles on it. do you think this would be a good investment? It would be my first car.

Thank you!!

  1. If your dad can fix cars with no problems then yes.

way too much mileage on a car thats only 8 years old.

  2. That is alot of miles, regardless of highway or not. Is your budget 3300 dollars? You could probably find a better deal than that. The owner could have taken perfect care of the car, but with 180.000 miles, and no idication of any drivetrain apart being replaced, I would be very concerned. It also makes no mention of paperwork backing up the claim of having it maintained. Oil changes, Transmission fluid changes, brakes, rotors, coolant flush. I mean there are alot of things that go wrong on cars when they have high mileage like that.

I would advise you to look elsewhere for your first vehicle. You do not want to get this and have to spend another 2000 when the tranny blows or something in the motor craps out.

  3. I love VWs, and they can last for a long time, but 180,000 miles is a lot! VWs are not the most reliable cars, and with 180,000 miles on the clock, that VW will probably break down a lot.

  4. No and no
