Question:

A 35 mm or 50 mm camera?

I have started a photography class in high school, and the supply list says that I need a 35 mm camera. I found one that my parents have had forever, but it is a Canon T50, which is 50 mm.

What is the difference?

Should I borrow a 35 from my friend?

  1. The T50 is a 35 mm camera. That means that it uses 35 mm film. The frame on these is 24 x 36 mm. The lens on it was a 50 mm lens which is the focal length so you can use the T50 in your class. 50 mm lenses were the most comonly seen ones on 35 mm SLRs. A 50 mm lens was suppused to give you a natural look similar to what the eye sees. There were other lenses but the new canon lenses will not fit this camera,

The one issue you may have is I think this camera was fully automatic ( I could be wrong I am a Nikon guy) If so they may want a camera that has a manual mode for your class. Check with your instructor

you can find the specs here

  2. Not a problem.  The Canon T50 is a 35mm camera.  The lens is a 50mm lens.

So you're good to go - you have a 35mm camera with a 50mm lens.

I know this stuff is confusing at first.  But just remember ... 35mm is the film size.  It's what most film cameras use - the kind you can buy almost anywhere.

50mm is what's called a "normal" lens on a 35mm camera body.  If the lens itself were 35mm, that would be considered lightly "wide angle,"  whereas if the lens were, say, 135mm, it would be a moderate telephoto.

Then, of course, there are zoom lenses.  These would have a range of, say, 35-135 (or something like that).

    Hope this was helpful.

  3. You just need an slr that shoots 35mm film. The 50mm is the focal length of the lens. 50mm is about the viewing angle that you see through your eye, a 500mm is considered telephoto. I hope this clarifies things for you.

You dont need to borrow one from a friend.
