  1. maybe.

  2. Usually after an earthquake, there can be several ''aftershocks''...usually smaller earthquakes, but sometimes an earthquake of the same magnitude.

  3. If anybody could answer a question like that they'd be rich.  Predicting earthquakes isn't something that ever works out very well.

But yes - you'll have a huge one - Jesus will come back - Li'l Georgie Bush will be lifted up into Heaven.  It's going to be really something to see!

  4. According to the United States Geological Survey, more than 3 million earthquakes occur every year. That's about 8,000 a day, or one every 11 seconds!

Luckily for us, astronomers have discovered over 160 moons we can escape to, if things get really dire here on Earth.  If NASA and all the other space agencies insert Superconducting Rings into Mars and all these other moons, to create a magnetic field which blocks out cosmic rays, we'll be able to migrate there and build atmospheres to survive.

Petition your space agency to terraform a moon for you, it doesn't happen by itself.

Take a course in survival skills to maximize your chances of future generations making it alive on other moons and planets.

Teach your kids about space.  You are a child of the Universe, no less than the stars and the trees, you have a right to be here.  (Desiderata)

@Quaternios aka AL MOSKOWITZ - lay the **** off or else.  You have no right to post a remark like that.  Everyone here knows you're a demented lunatic with a perverse motive.

  5. There are many variables involved. There is a formula that helps a little, it's called Omori's Law. Bath's Law can help predict strength of aftershocks. You should be able to find sources on the Internet that can explain those to you if you want a better understanding. But as for now, there is not really much in the way of accurate earthquake prediction, certainly nothing that can predict a date or strength as accurately as you have given.

  6. It depends upon where you are:

Mid-country, your answer is no.  California?  Possibly, although I seriously doubt July 18th.  No one - even a seismologist - is capable of accurately predicting when an earthquake (let alone an 8.5) will occur.

Having said that, I looked at the depth for the CA earthquakes.

They're all incredibly shallow, so there will be no 8.5 any time soon, especially not on the 18th.  You may OTOH experience smaller earthquakes though, but they will be nothing to worry about (much like your 4.0, although I bet if there's another it will be even less and you probably won't even feel it).

The quake you felt is most likely just a simple earth movement designed to give off a little bit of energy.  A piece of earth fitting better in its jigsaw space, so to speak.

I have 3 thumbs down. The same number of votes that Flash Gordon gets everytime a question he is on goes up for voting.
