Someone is going to be giving my family a kitten. She's 7 weeks old and the person said that they can't give it just yet because it's STILL drinking from it's mother. Is that normal?

  1. yeah, its normal, just wait a few more weeks for the kitten to be weened and you can take him home then.  Good luck!

  2. Kittens should not be separated from their mother until they are at least 8 weeks old.  So yes, it's normal.

However, when my cat had kittens, we decided to keep one of them and he was still drinking from his mother when he was 6 months old.  Eventually, her milk dried up, but when she had another litter of kittens, we had to keep him in another room for 8 weeks until her kittens were old enough to be given away.

  3. They shouldn't become dependent on the mother's milk at 7 weeks.

By 8 weeks they should be done with the mother's milk and move on to different stuff.

  4. kittens can be weaned at 6-8 weeks,if the kitten is still drinking from the mom,its ok obviously she is still producing milk.and allowing the kittens to suckle, its up to the owners to remove them from mom and put them on solids..the 7 weeks old kitten can start to be weaned now.

  5. Yeah, it's normal, they ween at a different rates.  It's better for her mother to make those sorts of decisions.  But the people there need to be offering her kitten food.  If they aren't helping the mother ween her then they need to start now.  If milk is all she's getting then that can put a major strain on mom.

We found a pregnant stray and gave away her kittens.  We waited until 10 weeks for one who went to a family with several cats already and almost 12 weeks for the two who went together to a family with no kitties.  It's really better for the kitten's health and mental well-being to wait.  My girl was still nursing them some up until they left.  They all adapted with no problems when they moved, but they were mostly eating wet food and some dry food.

Right now your kitten is learning important lessons about how to be a cat.  Let her stay with mom for several more weeks, she'll still be adorable and she'll be better behaved.

edit: 8 weeks in an absolute minimum, it's not the ideal age.  12 weeks is better.

  6. Some kittens wean earlier than others. But if a kitten is *forced* to wean too early it will suck on everything it can find - sofa cushions, people's earlobes - it is extremely annoying. Let the baby be a baby for a little while longer. It is only seven weeks old!! That is tiny!! Be patient.

  7. No after or even before 6 weeks its ready,as long as its eating solids as in cat or kitty food its ready to go!! the kitten could feed off the mother for another 2 weeks if the mother cat lets it but its not neccesary

  8. please don't accept the kitten till it is AT LEAST 10 weeks old, though 12 weeks is best
