A 70 to 1 shocker pulled by All Squared Away in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland
Trainer Wesley Ward, who moved the 3-year-old gelding, All Squared Away, to his barn from co-owner and trainer Pete Miller’s barn after the gelding’s sixth place finish in the Grade 3 Vinery Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on 24 March, 2012, saddled the son of Bellamy Road to his first victory in the Grade 3, $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, as he stunned the lot after being sent as the 70 to 1 longest shot on the board.
Owned by Altamira Racing Stable and Wire to Wire Racing Inc, All Squared Away took advantage of the early pace in the 1 1/16 mile event for 3-year-olds as he stormed down the center of the track and over took, Hammers Terror, by 1 ½ lengths to pull a massive upset on 21 April, 2012.
"Since the horse got here, as most do when they come to Keeneland, the horse just flourished," Ward said. "He just put a lot of weight on. He’s eaten the bottom out of the feed tub. When we worked him, the last couple of works have just been outstanding. He’s just thriving, being here.”
Bought for just $1,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall 2010 yearling sale, All Squared Away was based at Hollywood Park under Peter Miller’s training, but since he moved to Ward’s barn, he breezed only once over the Keeneland’s synthetic surface, but didn’t give out a hint to his trainer that he will pull a massive upset.
Under jockey Julio Garcia, All Squared Away after breaking form the gate settled in fourth, as the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes winner, Castaway, along with Johannesbourbon carved out early fractions.
The duo duelled away with the opening quarter mile of 23.21 seconds, storming past the half mile marker in 46.54 seconds.
Rounding off the bend, it was Johannesbourbon with a slender lead, but it was soon overturned by Hammers Terror.
Running down the upper stretch, Hammers Terror under Robby Albarado wilted to give way to All Squared Away to pull off a shocker with the winning time of 1 minute and 42.55 seconds, as the favoured Summer Front left it late to finish second.
