Ok I have been looking at pictures online of the coach seats on Amtrak. How do you sleep in the coach seat? It looks really uncomfortable! Do they have pillows and blankets for you onboard? I know Im asking alot of amtrak questions so dont be rude! Im trying to get as much info as possible. And the Amtrak website sucks!

Thanks

  1. I guess it depends on the person.

Naturally the seats aren't like sleeping in a bed at home but for me there were adequate and I slept well.  The seats recline slightly and yes you do receive pillows when its nite-nite time.

I love riding Amtrak - just hate we don't have it in Houston anymore.

  2. The provide the same pillows airlines do.   I always bring my own and a good blanket too.   The windows do not open, but sometimes a conductor will open a door window on the bottom level if its a double decker.    The seats aren't great, but there's usually room for everyone to get their own two seats on the routes I've been on.   Some hearing protection/ear muffs always help me to get to sleep when there's  a screaming kid nearby too.

  3. The seats are fairly roomy, much more than a bus or airplane. However, if you have other passengers on both sides of you, it can feel cramped trying to get a good nights sleep. I tried sleeping in them on my first overnight train trip. I did not sleep the entire night! Of course, I am 6'4" so depending on your height, it may be just fine. I upgraded to a sleeper car and had a wonderful experience. I alwaystake a sleeper car now! Yes, its more money, but woth the investment. It also includes all your meals.

  4. AMTRAK coach seats are quite comfortable. I carry two suitcases...one with my clothes and stuff and one with a full size pillow and a full size blanket (trains get cold at night). There is a t-shirt in the Seattle AMTRAK gift shop that reads, "real men ride coach."

  5. The seat is actually fairly comfortable - a good bit wider and with more legroom than an airline seat! As someone else answered they do hand out pillows - I think you might want to bring your own blanket as I'm not sure if those are provided. The windows by the seats do not open, but when I've ridden Amtrak, I've found the coach cabins to be reasonably air conditioned/heated as needed.

  6. The seats are uncomfortable but if you spend a little more money you can get a cubicle in the sleeper car. It's OK and you can, at least, lay down.
