Question:

A Baby with a high temp...?

My daughter is not sick and... knock on wood... hasn't been sick yet. But the other day I was talking to another mother and she told me that a baby can have a fever of 104 or 105 before the DR will even treat them. She said it's a sign of them fighting an infection? how true is this? I'll call the Dr. if my daughter ever gets sick or runs a fever 100 or over. Just wanted to know if anyone else has heard of this...

  1. I don't think that's true. My son is 2 months old and when I left the hospital they told me to call if his temp. got above 101. To let it get higher is insane, that could lead to serious damage for the baby!

  2. That is wrong info.  Do not wait till temperature reaches 104 or 105 before contacting dr.  A fever over 101 means that there is underlying infection / problem.  Some infections require immediate medical attention. If it is a serious one, waiting a couple of days for fever to get worse is not a good idea.

  3. A temperature isn't considered a fever until it is over 100.4. Now to talk about fevers - fevers are actually a good thing. It is the body working to heal the body. People are very worried about getting a fever down as soon as possible but that isn't always necessary. Parents are usually worried that a fever is going to cause brain damage but that is extremely rare. A normal child can tolerate a temp. of 104/105. A temp. of 106 is rare. Temps of 107 and above is when MD's become worried.

If giving tylenol give it because of the way the child is acting not because of the temperature.

With all that said this goes for a child above 3 months of age, under 3 months needs to be seen by an MD if they run a fever.

Before anyone gives me a thumbs down please educate yourself

  4. young childen can run high fever when my son teethed he got 104 and didn't do anything not even tylenol it depends how modern/conservative the doctor is it is not un heard of!

Adults don't treat till over 100.4 (because you regulated by now) children under where my peds go nothing treated under 104.1

  5. I would also take a baby to the doctor any time he or she gets sick. I definitely would not wait until a 104 fever to get help. A fever is the body raising its body temperature to fight off a bacterial or viral infection. Yes, fevers are the response of infections, but it isn't advised to let the baby endure one at 104 degrees. A fever can become fatal in an infant if left untreated.

  6. My kids go to the doctor as soon as their temps hit 100 and don't go down.  I would say this woman is mistreating her children.
