A Boxing Legend in the Making: Amir Khan
British boxing has a new champion, the likes of which it has not been seen before. Amir Khan is a boxer in the lightweight division and over the years has grown into a champion of unparalleled measures. Having come from humble beginnings to becoming the best boxer in Britain, Khan is now poised to take over the world. Amir Khan is a boxer with a very impressive professional and well as personal record and he is one of the few celebrities in the UK who does not let his image get tainted. Even though he has a few small blemishes on his personal record, he is one of the best boxers in the lightweight division and he looks all set to continue his impressive run in the future.
Amir Khan was born in 1986 in Bolton and proved to be a natural born fighter. He was very competitive as a child and started to shine at the age of 11. That was the age he won his first boxing match and he trained at facilities provided by the Bolton Wanderers football club. At school he won a number of boxing titles and even won a gold medal at the 2003 Junior Olympics. Amir Khan’s career was not really followed prior to the 2004 Olympics. At these Games he managed to get a silver medal first by knocking out a Korean boxer in the semi final and then finally being defeated by the Cuban boxer Mario Kindelan in the final. It was widely regarded that Kindelan was the world’s best amateur boxer at the time. Even though Khan was defeated at the Olympics, he managed to avenge himself by turning pro right after the Games and fighting Kindelan again and this time beating him. There is something about Khan’s character that does not allow him to give up, he fights to the end and refuses to give in at any point.
After turning pro, Khan had some very tough fights at the beginning of his career. One of his most impressive fights was in 2007 against Willie Limond. Khan was actually knocked down early on in the fight but his never-give-in attitude kicked in and despite being badly injured, he rallied back to knock out Limond in the seventh round. Khan claims this fight to be the best of his career. Another huge fight was against the toughest opponent he had faced at that point in his career, Graham Earl. This contest was compounded by a lot of animosity between the two fighters in the lead up to the fight and because of the bad blood between them, this fight was supposed to be huge. It turned out that through a barrage of punches, Khan defeated Earl in only 72 seconds. Khan is known for his intense punching speed and this got the better of Earl that day. After numerous fights like these Khan won and retained the Commonwealth Lightweight Title.
Amir Khan is one British sports star who has managed to keep himself out of the controversy limelight. A lot of athletes and celebrities use controversy to further their careers but for the most part Amir Khan is very clean, cut and wholesome. He is the face of British boxing at the moment and he does not want to do anything to ruin that image. But sadly things do happen and they reflect badly on a person’s character. Khan was reportedly caught speeding a few times in the past and once he actually hit a pedestrian and broke his leg. It seems speed got the better of the young boxer and he went a little crazy with his very expensive sports car. There was also a news story reported in the News of the World paper in the UK that related that a glamour model in the UK claimed that Amir Khan sent her lewd images of herself through text messages. Well if we are to believe these stories or not, they did not really seem to impact on the young boxer’s image and popularity. His charitable work in the UK and all around the world makes up for any speeding fines or pictures sent to models.
We have yet to see the full extent of this impressive boxer’s range and power. In a few years he will really come into his own and he will be one of the best boxers in the world. With his raw punching speed and accuracy, Khan will be the boxer to beat in future.
