I have a 99 Grand Prix 3.8 that the A/C compressor has been getting progresively noiser until now that I think it failed. When the a/c is put on the compressor wont click on at all. What should I check first? Also, can I remove the compressor and replace it and just recharge the system?? Informative replys are what I'm looking for so if your going to reply by telling me to take it to a mechanic please dont waste yours and my time. Thanks

  1. The most common failure on a '99 GP is the compressor case leaks at the housing O rings from corrosion. You can add a dye for the system with a partial charge to check this. I have had some condensers leak also, on the drivers side below the air box. Your best bet is to add dye and see where it is coming from!

  2. The clicking is the electro magnetic clutch closing the air gap between the plates. As the clutch wears, the air gap increases and the click becomes more noticeable. This is a adjustable setting but it does require speciality tools to accomplish. The placement of different shim thicknesses determines the air gap and is measured with a brass feeler gauge between the clutch plates. Take a test light and see if the clutch is receiving power when the A/C is activated, if so you may have just a bad clutch. The cost of a clutch is generally a bit more than half that of a re maned compressor. If you are not getting power to the clutch, jumper the low pressure switch and see if that activates the clutch. If it does, the system is low on freon. Good Luck
