The Rossoneri chief optimistic of Scudetto chances despite defeat in Milan derby, and targets win over Novara next week.

The Rossoneri suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Claudio Ranieri’s men at the San Siro on Sunday, January 15. The defeat puts the Champions down to second spot in the league table, but Galliani is still optimistic of his team’s
chances of defending the Scudetto.
The Vice-President insists that there are still 20 matches left to play in the league and his team is five points above the Nerazzurri. The 67-year-old insists that Milan have targeted 40 points for the first-half of the season,
as they did in the last season.
While talking to the reporters, Galliani said,
“The League table is what talks in football. At the minute, with 20 games to go, we have five more points than Inter. There are five teams from Inter’s 32 points to Juventus’ 38. The three points against Inter are as important
as those against Novara and Cagliari. We need to end the first half of the season with 40 points as we did last season – that possibility remains.”
Galliani believes that his team were unlucky to lose the Milan derby, as they dominated the game with majority of the possession and chances. He insisted that the game was played in a very narrow approach and it was predicted that
the team scoring first would win.
“We dominated possession. There were not a lot of scoring opportunities and it was clear that whoever opened the scoring would win.”
Milan’s 12 game unbeaten run was ended after the defeat to Inter at the weekend. However, the Nerazzurri have picked up six consecutive wins in the league, and have introduced themselves as genuine title contenders.
The Italian Champions have picked up 37 points from 18 matches played thus far, and drift leaders, Juventus, by just one point.
Milan will travel to Novara for their next league game on Sunday, January 22, 2012.
