Question:

A/C not working after replacing compressor & accumulator

I have a 1998 Ford Taurus. It uses R134a refrigerant. I replaced the compressor and accumulator. And, since I'm not an expert on the A/C system of my car, I took it to my father-in-law to assist with re-charging. He proceeded to put in 1 can (air wasn't blowing cold), then he put in the 2nd can (air still not blowing cold), so he decided to put in a 3rd can (still no cold air). The compressor didn't even kick on. He didn't use any gages to check the refrigerant level, so I have no idea what the pressure is in the system. I did notice that it took the cans a long time to dispense - about 10 minutes per can (maybe longer). Before I continue down a path that may wind up damaging the system, I need some serious advise. What exactly do I need to do to get my A/C system working right and blowing cold air?
