Our A/C stopped working this weekend and we noticed there was ice on the lines outside. I searched for some answers and some responses said "check air filter"...does that mean the one on the furance? Also, the fan does not seem to be working when the you turn it on the thermostat. Any anwers will be extremly helpful....we are renters and are landlords are HUGE jerks. Thanks in advance

  1. HVAC Tech.:  You have major problems. Only a trained technician will be able to evaluate your problem, because there are so many aspects to it. You will have to deal with your landlord. With so much summer left, I know it is not something you want to put off. Get started and Good LUCK!!

  2. a dirty air filter has the same effect as a faulty indoor fan, no air flow across your indoor coil. the system cannot transfer the chilled air so everything freezes over. the indoor fan could be off on overload, have a bad capacitor, or be shot. shut everything off for a few hours and see if the fan comes on in "fan" mode. if it does, listen for noises and see if it gets hot to the touch. you can also visually inspect the capacitor for any obvious signs of failure. BE CAREFUL! caps hold a charge and will shock you even with power off!

yes, the air filter in the furnace is the one to check out. your unit may also be undercharged, and the iced over line should be insulated. probably need a service call. gl with it!

  3. As to the filter, it is the one that is in the furnace. That is your air handler for the system. Replace it and try it again. If it still ices up, you are low on refrigerant or the coils in the air handler are dirty.

When you turn the switch on the thermostat marked FAN to ON it should come on and stay on. If it goes off, you have a problem with a contact or the blower motor is over heating and shutting down. It will go on and off as needed when it is in the AUTO position.

  4. U didnt say much about UR setup but I magine its gas forced air heat with AC on the side.

The air filter for the evap coil is dirty so U must replace it..

The fan should have come on,,try the switch marked ''fan'' on the thermostat and see if it turns it on. If yo get nothing then its time to withhold the rent money until something gets done. Its the only way to get action. Or just use up your deposit and move then.

  5. it could be compressor , fan motor going out , low on freon or drain clogged-air filter would be right in front of unit-landlord might be jerk but its going to take them to have it checked
