I'm looking to get a new Nissan Versa but i'm debating between getting a CVT or an automatic transmission.

Looking at the reviews they get about the same gas milage (more for the CVT in the city, but still close)

I drive mainly highway and i'm worried more about the long run (5 years down the road) i hear the CVT is more expensive up front and down the road with repairs... is this true?

And which should i go with?

  1. CVT is the wave of the future.  It gives you better gas mileage, optimized driving ratios, theoretically better performance.  A huge advantage is that a CVT has about 7 parts to it, compared to a conventional automatic's 200+ parts that could break or go wrong.  CVTs should never have to shift (although they can be programmed to give you that impression) so you never have that head-bobble jerk when accelerating, giving very smooth acceleration.  IMHO, CVTs just don't give that great performance... but I prefer driving manual!  One "downside" is the engine doesn't rev up with speed, it just stays constant... kinda sounds like a blender.

  2. Manual is cheaper up front and down the road. Autos are more convenient in bumper to bumper traffic but any other time the manual is always the best choice, operationally, functionally and effeciently.

  3. If you have two legs get a manual.

    If not, just get auto
