  1. You can only make 1 first move. After that all moves are secondary.

  2. Or you could offer a draw, so technically, if the draw offer is accepted, it's 22!

Also, it depends on what you mean by "a move".

Strictly speaking "a move" means "a move by each player", so you could argue 400 possible first moves (20x20).

Oh tish, the real answer's 20!

  3. I count 20. Each pawn can move 1 or 2 squares on their first move so that makes 16. Each knight can also move because they can jump over pieces they can either go left or right so each of the two knights can make two moves which is 4. 16+4=20. So you can do any one of 20 moves on the first move.

  4. 8*1 form 2 to 3

    8*1 from 2 to 4

4 because the knights can move either left or right

    =

    20

  5. 20 is right.

Chess isn't sad it is a battle of intelligence:D

  6. Each pawn can go forward one space or 2 spaces so that is 16 possible moves and each knight can go either forward and right or forward and left, so that is another 4 moves.

So that is 20 possible 1st moves!

    :o)

  7. or you could resign. so technically it's 21.

no, seriously, the earlier posters are correct.

  8. 20

  9. 20 (one or two spaces for each of the eight pawns, and a move to the left or the right for both knights)
