A Dwarf Frog and Guppies question?

Well I want to surprise my sister with i mini setup for her room. I have a 2.5 gallon hexagonal tank with a light on top. I was wondering if an African Dwarf Frog and like 2 (probably male) guppies or the frog and a male betta fish would be ok together. If they wouldn't be ok can you tell me any other fish that would be ok? Or none just tell me please. Also can you tell me how to take care of the frog like what they eat and how often she is going to need to clean the tank. And should she keep the aquarium light on or not? If so when and for how long?

  1. I wouldn't suggest putting bettas with guppies, the betta will think its another betta and attack it. I would just stick with either the guppies and frog or just a betta.

  2. I once had 2 aquatic frogs and 1 betta in one of those hexagonal tanks you're describing.  They all lived together fine for quite awhile (several months and then the frogs died).  I think it got too cold for the frogs at times and caused their death.  The betta would pick on them at times but they had places to hide so they lived pretty well together.

One suggestion - remember to do water changes weekly.  Even though there's an air pump and the fish is getting oxygen in the water, the water will accumulate waste since there is no filter.

  3. I have 2 frogs. There cool but don't do very much. its totally up to you on the light. Don't have it on for more than 12 hours, and establish a time for when its on and off. I have frog pellets that sink to the bottom and they also eat what ever fish food sunk to the bottom. If you're tank has a filter once a month. If not I would be more frequent, not to many times 2 times a month maybe. Only do a 25 % water change though, other wise it will but them in to much stress and they'll die. I killed like 10 guppies cleaning the tank once a week. Hope this helped :)

  4. A frog and a betta is a better choice for a tank that size than a frog and guppies.  Frogs have trouble competing for food and guppies are greedy little fish that will eat everything and leave nothing for a frog if they can.  Bettas will eat from the surface only and let the frog have any food that sinks.  So if you get some floating betta pellets and some sinking pellets for the frog you'll be fine.  Feed them each 2-3 pellets once or twice a day, but no more than they'll eat in a few minutes.

Also, guppies really need more room to swim around in than 2.5 gallons and if you only get 2 males they will pick on each other.  If you get a male and a female the male will harass the female too much trying to breed with her all the time and the female will be popping out fry so much you'll need more and more tanks to deal with the population explosion.  So stick with a betta and a frog.  Just the betta alone would be better, or a 5 gallon tank for the 2 of them, but what you have will do for now.  Make sure the frog is an african dwarf frog and NOT an african clawed frog!

Turn the light off at night before going to sleep and then turn it back on in the morning.  All critters, including fish, like to have a period of dark in which to rest.  Yes, fish sleep too.  Bettas love plants, so a live plant in the tank would be a very good idea.

With a frog and a betta in the tank, I'd suggest a 20-25% water change twice a week.  Just use some kind of suction device (a piece of air hose or gravel vacuum or a turkey baster will do) to suck up the gunk at the bottom of the tank along with some dirty water and replace it with clean, conditioned water of the same temperature.

  5. Bettas and guppies are not a good combination. The reason is, betta's will think of the guppies as another betta and attack it.

I would only put a betta in that tank. A hex tank is very small, and it does not provide much swimming space. Guppies would not appreciate this, and they enjoy being kept in groups.

If you want to keep guppies and dwarf frogs, I suggest getting a 10 gallon tank. You can get a tank with a filter and everything for only $30. This way, you could have more variety of fish. And a 10 gallon tank isn't too much maintance either.

    Good luck!
