Question:

A Family Tree Maker which plots your ENTIRE FAMILY and ALL RELATIVES in the ONE TREE?

I'm conducting genealogical research. I've got a fair bit of data stored in GEDCOM files.

I want a program, or website, that will plot absolutely everybody in the one one tree. Brothers, sisters, cousins, distant cousins, uncles, people only related by marriage, etc.

I basically want to create a massive tree with all my available information. (even if it's text based, that's ok too)

Most programs, like Family Tree Maker 2008, only allow you to show your ascendants (ie, not showing my cousins), or the descendants from a particular person (ie, not showing that person's siblings - if the parents are unknown).

Please help.

Thank you

  1. try the master genealogist. if you have all the info you need, you can take advantage of their 30 day free trail and get all you need done in a month. if not, it is like 50 bucks.

  2. I use genes reunited for my family tree. You can put as much information as you want in your tree and then other users can match their relatives to your tree. It has automatic matches that can be emailed to you. I have found some relatives through this site.

The drawback is that you cannot add the other users tree to yours but you can see it. You can then manually add their tree to yours to make it bigger.

Genes reunited is also free for general use. There are benefits to paying the membership for extended access however it is not something that must be done. I don't have extended membership right now as I don't have time to acti vely research my tree, when I have time for research I will pay the money for the extra access again.

There's no harm in trying it anyway.

  3. I use Cumberland Family Tree.  It is not free, but there is a try before you buy option where you can try it for a month.

I believe that this does do all the things you mention.

It should be available from the website but is temporarily unavailable at the moment.

If you would like to try it, send me a message with your email address and I will try and send you an evaluation copy.

  4. My FTM is version 11, Copyright 2003.

To by-past the problem of an unknown parent, I type Unknown for the name, as if it is the name, then add the children and any other info.

I subscribe to ancestry.com and their program will accept a GED file.
