A Few things Rory McIlroy should be worried about
Rory McIlroy, as his number one ranking speaks, is no doubt the best player in the world of golf these days.
At the age of 23, he has developed himself as the master of the game. In just a few years, he has added a number of professional victories to his resume and looks to continue in the years to come.
He has a stellar golfing career ahead of him and he is currently moving right on track to become a perfect golfer. However, what appears to be perfect does not always mean is free of flaws. Same is the case with the Northern Irishman.
He does have a few areas to work on. Otherwise, he will not remain the world number one player in the time to come.
From this, one cannot infer that he has some traditional weaknesses. In fact, some of them are even intangibles, but are important to be worked on.
One must remember the Ryder Cup debacle earlier this month. Here, the reference is not being made to the US team’s meltdown on the final day. In fact, it is at McIlroy, who was seen speeding to the course at the start of the Sunday’s singles.
McIlroy reached the venue course just 11 minutes before his singles match against Keegan Bradley. Otherwise, he would have been disqualified for not appearing on time.
McIlroy did manage to beat Bradley 2&1 in the end. However, it could have been a disaster for the European team if the young hero had been further late.
At the end of the match, he stated that he was fooled by the difference in the time zones and was expecting the match to start one hour later.
"I actually took a nap and my dad had to come wake me up because I overslept. He said to me, 'Rory, you realise you have to play some golf this afternoon.' I was like, 'I didn't know where I was,'" the Northern Irishman explained in a post-tournament press
conference at the Medinah Country Club.
There is no doubt that players do make such kind of mistakes. However, one cannot expect such type of careless attitude from the best player in the world, especially at a tournament like the Ryder Cup.
Another issue that he needs to work on is his putting. He is a good putter, no doubt about that.
Still, when it comes to his overall game, his putting sits a little below. So far in the 2012 PGA Tour season, he ranks 80th in putting with 0.087 strokes gained.
During the initial years of his professional career, he was known for missing short putts. Now days, he does not miss them that often. However, he still needs plenty of work to do on his short game.
Other than lack of concentration and putting issues, he also has some accuracy problems off the tee. He is regarded as one of the biggest hitters on the PGA Tour, with an average of 310.1 yards off the tee in 2012.
However, when it comes to big hitting, one has to compromise on accuracy. Same is the case with the young star.
He currently ranks 155th in driving accuracy with a percentage of 56.61 in 2012. Therefore, he desperately needs to bring accuracy in his game off the tee, if he really wants to remain on the top.
