A.J. Burnett delivers as Detroit Tigers collapse 1-10 against New York Yankees – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were annihilated 1-10 as A.J. Burnett overcame criticism from all circles to produce a gem of a performance for the New York Yankees on Tuesday, October 4 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan to level the American League Division Series at
two-each.
Before the game, Burnett said, “I’m just going to go at it as a start. It’s my chance to get on the mound to be a part of something and to do what I can as long as I can, until Joe takes me out.”
Struggling to keep his spot in the rotation, Burnett had no other choice but to halt Detroit's offence. He went a step ahead and won the game, pitching five-plus innings and allowing just one run amid four hits in the stretch. Victor Martinez was the only
batter to score a run for the Tigers, smashing a home-run towards right-field in the fourth inning.
Ramon Santiago, Delmon Young and Miguel Cabrera combined went 0-for-10 to pile up problems for Detroit’s offence. Yankees, on the contrary, got back into their offensive groove with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira delivering when required the most. Prior
to this game, A-Rod was 0-for-10 in the post-season thus far, but went 2-for-4 in this game to effectively mark his comeback. He drove in a run in the fifth inning and then scored in the eighth inning to contribute in what was a much-needed win for the Yankees.
Russell Martin and Brett Gardner were, by far, the most productive batters in the Yankees’ line-up. Both went 2-for-4 and scored twice to show the depth in the offence. Jesus Montero impressed yet again, connecting twice in as many at-bats and scoring once
to strengthen his case as a daily player for the next season.
Rick Porcello was tipped to prevail against Burnett in the match-up, but Detroit’s starter failed to take command over the AL East Champions and lost the game after tossing six innings for four runs at an earned-run average of 6.00.
With the series now going back to the Bronx, the Tigers are in the commanding seat to ensure a Championship Series spot. However, the Yankees will not be an easy opposition to beat at home.
