A.J. Burnett sparks as New York Yankees defeat Boston Red Sox 6-2 – Game 1
New York Yankees’ starting pitcher, A.J. Burnett had a notable day with the ball as he pitched just over seven innings and struck-out six batters with an ERA of 5.16 in the Yankees’ 6-2 double-header victory over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, New
York on September 25.
Yankees started well as they scored their initial two runs in the first inning to get a 2-0 lead. Derek Jeter stole second base and Brett Gardner scored a single run on the missed catch error of Red Sox catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The second run was
taken by Jeter on the wild pitch of Tim Wakefield.
David Ortiz walked during the second inning but Conor Jackson struck-out. Adrian Gonzalez hit a grounder into double play, second to short-stop position and short-stop to first base but Ortiz got out at second base. Similarly, Yankees’ first baseman Brandon
Laird ground out to third base, Ramiro Pena struck-out swinging and Gardner flied out to left-field without adding any run at the bottom of second inning.
In the third inning, Yankees again scored couple of runs to take a 4-0 lead. Jorge Posada struck a two-run homer (393 feet) to right-field and Alex Rodriguez posted one run at the bottom of third inning. Jacoby Ellsbury struck a grand slam (399 feet) towards
right-field to give the Red Sox their first run and reduced their lead 4-1 during the fourth inning.
Yankees posted one run in the fifth inning to raise their lead 5-1. Jeter added one run when Rodriguez hit a single-run drive towards right-centre. Later, Rodriguez moved to second base on a throwing error. During the sixth, Red Sox scored one run to cut
their deficit while Yankees also contributed a single run to advance their lead 6-2 at the bottom of the sixth inning.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said, “When it doesn't go right it's my responsibility. It's not the best time, but I should brag about it. That's an amazing feat.”
Ellsbury struck his second homer (381 feet) of the game towards right-field to keep the Red Sox alive. On the other side, Laird added a single run for the Yankees when Jeter hit a ground rule double to right-field.
As a result, Yankees led off the three-game series 2-0 against the Red Sox at New York.
