A-League: Newcastle Jets fend off North Queensland Fury
Newcastle Jets have regained a spot in the top 6 in the Australian A-League, after defeating http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Australia-c746 Stadium.
8000 fans turned up to witness the game this Tuesday and the home side did well to dominate throughout the 90 minutes of play, grabbing a lead as early as in the 12th minute of the game, through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marko-Jesic-c24183.
Newcastle Jets could have scored more goals to increase the advantage, but an impressive display of defending and some great saves by the young keeper of the opposition, Sebastian Usai, kept the away team in the game till the final whistle.
The win takes Newcastle to the sixth spot on the Hyundai A-League table, just one point behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Melbourne-Victory-c39899 with a game in hand, while leaving Fury at the bottom of the table.
Branko Culina, the head coach of Newcastle Jets, was very satisfied with his team’s performance as the recent win was the side’s 2nd consecutive win in 4 days. He said that he wanted his side to grab at least 4 points out of the 2 games and having
6 points is a great and reassuring result for his side.
Before the start of the game, both teams and their fans observed a minute of silence to show their support for the people affected by the disastrous floods in Queensland.
Robbie Middleby, the Operations Manager at Fury, said that the day was an emotional day indeed, but he was proud of his players’ performance.
"It has been a very hectic day, to be honest... we are all very attached to Queensland and what is going on at the moment", said an emotional Middleby.
He also said that after missing a few key players for the tie, his team performed exceptionally well and did their best to keep the home team at bay.
Newcastle Jets went into the game at full strength, with just one change to their team from when they beat North Queensland 3-1 on Saturday night; Marcello Fiorentini replaced the injured, Adam D’Apuzzo. Fury coach, Franz Straka had already indicated that
he would be using the remaining league games as a platform to gain experience for those players who hadn’t played much in the season, and seemed to have stayed true to his word, with Jason Sapgnuolo, Gareth Eddds and Brett Studman in the starting eleven and
Eric Akoto and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Williams-c10633, the main striker, was given a rest for this match.
Jets, being the home side and with a stronger squad, started the game brightly and scored in the 12th minute through an excellent attacking move. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Labinot-Haliti-c21576 broke free of his marker and sent in a cross to the back post, where an unmarked Jesic
executed a well placed left-foot shot to give his side the lead.
6 minutes later, Jets almost doubled their lead when Ruben caught the Fury defense by surprise with a pass from Wehrman. Even though Ruben was able to beat the keeper, he was unable to direct his rushed shot in the goal and the ball narrowly missed the crossbar,
flying out of the playing area.
Newcastle totally dominated the proceedings and some really desperate defending by the Fury kept the scoreline 1-0. The best chance for the visitors came when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jason-Spagnuolo-c17976, but his low shot was spectacularly saved by Nash. The scoreline
could have been much worse for Fury, but Usai did well to execute impressive saves denying Haliti and then http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tarek-Elrich-c34674.
In the end, Jets couldn’t add to their lead and the match ended in a 1-0 win for the home side.
